Second suspect arrested in Town of Bedford shooting

Following an extensive and ongoing investigation, Khari Omari Berger age 21 of Lynchburg has been
arrested for the following charges:
§ 18.2-51.2 Aggravated malicious wounding.
§ 18.2-22 Conspiracy to commit felony.
§ 18.2-53.1 Use or display of firearm in committing felony.
§ 18.2-279 Discharging firearms or missiles within or at building or dwelling house.
§ 18.2-422 Prohibition of wearing of masks in certain places.
This investigation is in relation to the May 14, 2026 shooting which occurred outside a residence on
Piedmont Street in the Town of Bedford. After suffering gunshot wounds, a 29-year-old victim was flown
to Lynchburg General Hospital for emergency surgery. Surgery and subsequent medical care were
successful and the victim survived. Initial eyewitness reports, as well as surveillance footage, would
depict two masked individuals approaching the victim’s residence before a number of gunshots rang out.
The Bedford Police Department would like to thank the Lynchburg Police Department, the Virginia State
Police, and the United States Marshal Service for their assistance in this investigation. This arrest was
made possible through the effective use of a variety of investigative tools and resources, including Flock
Safety ALPR technology, cell tower analysis, phone forensics, crime scene forensics, approximately 70
search warrants and court orders, and the expertise of regional law enforcement gang investigators.
On June 30, 2026, the Bedford Police Department also charged Damonyea Mallory of Lynchburg with six
felonies for his alleged role in this incident.
