ACCREDITATION

Comment on Bedford Police

Public Portal Link For Comments https://cimrs2.calea.org//957)

The purpose of this public portal is to receive comments regarding an agency's compliance with CALEA standards, engagement in the service community, delivery of public safety services, and overall candidacy for accredited status. These comments can be in the form of commendations or concerns. The overall intent of the accreditation process is to provide the participating agency with information to support continuous improvement, as well as foster the pursuit of professional excellence.

IMPORTANT: CALEA is not an investigatory body and subsequently the public portal should not be used to submit information for such purposes.  Additionally, there will be no response other than acknowledgement to submissions; however, the information will be considered in context to its relevancy to compliance with standards and the tenets of CALEA® Accreditation.

In 2017 Bedford Police Department began the process of becoming CALEA certified. CALEA stands for Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies. Inc. “Accreditation embodies the precepts of community-oriented policing. It creates a forum in which law enforcement agencies and citizens work together to prevent and control challenges confronting law enforcement and provides clear direction about community expectations.” This gold achievement further validates our commitment to the Town of Bedford and to the citizens we serve.

A full time Accreditation Manger, along with Chief Lewis and all the officers and staff at BPD are working diligently to get this esteemed certification. The process is long and rigorous but the rewards of being a better agency for the town outweigh the hard work.

The Value of National Accreditation

Accreditation means Bedford Police Department has met or exceeded professional standards set by the Commission. Commission standards mean an outline or a road map of success. CALEA provides resources to aid law enforcement agencies in being the best they can be.

Adherence to an acknowledged body of professional standards may help protect an agency against a variety of potential liability problems.

We at Bedford PD are excited about this next chapter.
