BEDFORD, VA - On Thursday, March 12, 2026, at approximately 8:05 p.m., officers from the Bedford
Police Department were dispatched and responded to a disturbance at the Raintree Village
Apartments located at 720 Blue Ridge Avenue in the Town of Bedford. Bedford County Emergency
Communications received a call from residents who reported hearing what sounded like a female
being assaulted inside an apartment by a male subject. The caller reported hearing screaming,
yelling, and sounds consistent with a physical altercation. At least one Neighbor attempted to
intervene by knocking on the apartment door.
While BPD officers were responding to the scene, a male inside the apartment contacted dispatch
stating that people were banging on his door and that he would “do what he has to do to protect his
family.” This prompted additional units from the Bedford County Sheriff’s Office to also respond to the
scene. The first BPD units arrived on scene in less than 5 minutes and immediately attempted
contact with the occupants. After numerous attempts, a female came to the door and initially stated
that everything was fine. Officers detected verbal cues that raised their suspicion that the female was
in distress. The female stated that she would come outside and speak with the officers, but then
became silent and did not exit the apartment. Dispatch started to receive calls from inside the
residence, during which the male occupant could be heard directing the female what to say.
Based on the information gathered, prior history involving the individual, and concern for the female’s
welfare, officers consulted with the on-call Commonwealth’s Attorney and obtained a search warrant
for the apartment. Several residents from neighboring apartments had to be evacuated for their
safety. A warrant was obtained for the arrest of 29-year-old Sean Allen Lankford for abduction
related to preventing the victim’s freedom of movement.
The Bedford County Sheriff’s Office Tactical Response Team (TRT) made up of members from both
BCSO and BPD responded to assist with the service of the warrant. De-escalation and Crisis
“To Protect and to Serve”
Negotiation attempts were unsuccessful in getting the suspect to voluntarily release the victim, and
comply with orders to surrender and exit the apartment.
At approximately 11:47 p.m., the search warrant was executed via dynamic entry into the apartment.
Lankford was taken into custody without incident and the female was safely rescued and removed
from the apartment.
Bedford County Emergency Medical Services evaluated the victim at the scene. During the
investigation, officers observed multiple injuries consistent with an assault, including contusions to the
victim’s hand, arm, forehead, neck, and other areas. The victim reported that Lankford had assaulted
her earlier in the evening and had impeded her breathing during the altercation.
Sean Allen Lankford has been charged with:
• Abduction
• Aggravated Malicious Wounding (Strangulation)
• Domestic Assault and Battery
An Emergency Protective Order was also served. Lankford was transported to the Blue Ridge
Regional Jail where he is being held without bond. This case remains under investigation by the
Bedford Police Department.
The Bedford Police Department would like to thank the Bedford County Sheriff’s Office, Bedford
County Tactical Response Team, Bedford County Emergency Services, and Bedford County
Emergency Communications for their assistance in bringing this situation to a successful conclusion.
We would also like to thank the residents of Raintree Village Apartments for choosing to get involved
by reporting the situation and also for their cooperation and understanding during the lengthy
operation.
No further information is available for release at this time.
